Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and Rogue are stuck in an alternate universe where Apocalypse is king. Players must battle with these characters to save the day and return to the real world. This game features one of the largest rosters of X-Men characters in one game. This game is remembered as one of the best X-Men fighters largely because of its roster and arenas with multiple transitions and environments.

The soundtrack album was released one year after the game, in , and featured different elements depending on the character selected. However, the basic structure of the songs was the same. All the positive heroes in the game are playable, including Magneto. However, the last one can only be played with after the third level, when his character is unlocked. Magneto was never a playable character upon this game's release.
The player chooses his favorite character and after the first stage, the level ends and allows players to change for another hero. Each character has its own skills and weaknesses.
Two of the characters, Wolverine and Nightcrawler, are also able to scale walls and ceilings, while Psylocke and Beast can grab onto walls.
